Hello from sunny Canggu! I'm Anggie Fitriana, and at Loys Bloom Boutique, we love nothing more than seeing the joy our beautiful Bali flowers bring. Whether you've received a stunning tropical bouquet as a gift or treated yourself from our Canggu flower shop, you'll naturally want to enjoy its vibrant beauty for as long as possible.
Tropical blooms are known for their exotic allure and resilience, but Bali's warm climate requires a little extra know-how to keep flowers fresh. Here are my top tips for caring for your arrangements:
1. The Fresh Cut is Crucial (Even After Arrival)
Even though your bouquet from a quality Bali florist like ours arrives fresh, giving the stems a new cut once you get them home can make a big difference.
- How: Use a sharp, clean knife or shears (not scissors, which can crush stems). Cut about 1-2cm (half an inch to an inch) off the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle.
- Why: This opens up the stem's ability to absorb water, as the ends can dry out or get clogged during transit. Doing this underwater can prevent air bubbles from blocking uptake.
2. Water Wisely: Clean and Plenty
Fresh water is the lifeblood of your bouquet.
- Change Daily (or Every Other Day): Empty the vase, rinse it thoroughly, and refill with fresh, cool water. This prevents bacterial growth that can harm your flowers.
- Water Level: Ensure all stems are submerged. Some tropical flowers are thirstier than others!
- Flower Food (If Provided): If your florist in Bali included a packet of flower food, use it! It contains nutrients and an anti-bacterial agent. If not, a tiny drop of bleach (just a drop!) or a crushed aspirin can sometimes help keep water cleaner, but use sparingly.
3. Location, Location, Location!
Where you place your tropical bouquet significantly impacts its longevity.
- Avoid Direct Sunlight: While Bali is sunny, direct, intense sunlight can scorch delicate petals and dehydrate your flowers quickly. Bright, indirect light is best.
- Steer Clear of Heat Sources: Keep your arrangement away from ripening fruit (they release ethylene gas which ages flowers), electronics that generate heat, or open windows with hot drafts.
- Cooler is Better (Within Reason): A cooler spot in the room will generally help your Bali flowers last longer. Avoid placing them directly in the path of an air conditioner if it's too strong, as this can also dehydrate them.
4. Prune as Needed
- Remove Wilting Leaves/Petals: Gently remove any leaves that fall below the waterline in the vase, as they'll rot and contaminate the water. Also, pluck off any petals or blooms that are clearly past their prime. This not only keeps the arrangement looking fresh but also prevents decay from spreading.
5. Misting for Some Tropicals (Optional)
Some tropical flowers, like orchids or anthuriums, thrive in humidity. A light misting with clean water once a day can help replicate their natural environment, especially if your indoor air is dry. However, avoid misting flowers with very delicate or fuzzy petals. When in doubt, ask your Canggu florist for advice on specific blooms.
